Overview

Along with the essential courses in practical skills, world music, traditional music and performance practice, the Bachelor of Music in Performance and Pedagogy (Honours) from University Sains Malaysia provides students with a fundamental training in music pedagogy which has a special focus on early childhood music education.

What you'll study

At the department, students have the opportunity to perform with local and international artists through the various collaborations between the university and partner establishments. A number of student recitals are scheduled into each semester to provide a platform for students to engage activity in music making. All the different courses embedded within the programme is a reflection of the department's commitment in providing students with a well-rounded music education that highlights both eastern and western musical traditions.

General requirements

Minimum entry requirements to all programmes are Malaysian Higher School Certificate of Education and Malaysian Certificate of Education with a credit pass in Bahasa Malaysia. Applicants with previous professional / industrial experience may be accepted in lieu of some, or all, of the formal academic requirements.
As for the international students, academic qualifications which are considered to be equivalent will be placed into consideration. Applicants will be advised on the matter.
IN ADDITION, all candidates must pass an interview and an audition on the student's principal instrument in which three contrasting pieces from different stylistic periods and/or pieces of traditional Malay, Chinese or Indian music are performed, and ability in sight reading and listening (ear training) are demonstrated.
