Overview

The Biomedicine programme from University Sains Malaysia is multidisciplinary in nature and allows students to explore the latest information and technology in the fields of Biomedical Sciences. It encompasses all aspects of laboratory diagnosis, disease prevention and research in the fields of Biomedical Sciences. Industrial training, Biomedical Practicum and Research Project are introduced in the final stage of the studies to equip the students with the knowledge and skills in the diagnostic and clinical laboratory, disease prevention and research fields.

This programme is carefully designed to cater for the manpower requirements of both the private and public sectors of the nation. The curriculum takes cognizance of the need to be proactive in its approach, whereby curricula of institutions from the US, Europe and Australia were used as benchmarks. This is to ensure that the curriculum is of quality and of high standards capable of producing graduates who are competent and globally competitive.

Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

• Apply theoretical, conceptual and practical knowledge in biomedical sciences.
• Perform medical laboratory procedure or research, validate findings and conduct research under supervision in biomedical and research laboratories.
• Utilise scientific thinking as well as critical and creative thinking in identifying and solving problems in biomedical and research laboratories, and subsequently apply the research knowledge towards effective services.
• Present information and findings clearly, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
• Demonstrate social and teamwork skills, as well as responsible and sensitive towards community and health issues.
• Adhere to safety requirements and regulations, legislative and ethical principles, as well as code of conduct in biomedical and research laboratories.
• Apply skills and principles of life long learning in academic and career development, as well as utilise ICT and information management system to enhance practice in biomedical and research laboratories.
• Practice quality management system and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), as well as demonstrate entrepreneurial skills in biomedical and research laboratories.
• Demonstrate leadership quality and social skills in biomedical or research laboratories, and able to work together with healthcare professional team.

Career prospects for the Biomedicine programme include:

• Science or research officers at research centres, institutions of higher learning, hospitals, public and private medical laboratories.
• Production and administrative officers in related industries including Quality Control officers, sales personnel and advisors in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage industries; insurance underwriters; suppliers of medical products and instrumentations and as environmental officers.
• Tutors or lecturers at academic institutions of higher learning in both private and public sectors. Graduates can also register as post-graduate students or join the academic staff training scheme at any of the institutions of higher learning.
• Scientific or commercial ventures in biotechnology fields.
