Overview
During the Bachelor's program in American Studies , you will explore the United States in all its complexity - its societ, politics, history, culture and language. You will gain in-depth knowledge of American literature, media, the arts and political institutions, as well as the role of the U.S. in global affairs. You will also study the spread and status of English as a world language and work towards mastering both spoken and written English at a professional level.
American Studies is one of the two specializations in our Bachelor's degree program in English Language and Culture. If your interest lies in language, literature and culture of Britain and other English-speaking regions, please check the English Language and Culture program.

Year 1
Introduction to the main aspects of the academic study of the English language and American Studies (literature, history, culture, politics and linguistics) and American-English language proficiency training. You will learn to critically read American literary texts, be familiarized with the methodologies needed to analyze literary texts in an academic context and critically approach the history of the United States.
Year 2
The topics and approaches to studying North American society expand to include media, popular culture, art history and foreign policy. You move into more in-depth analysis of key themes through thematic seminars on topics such as American identity and diversity, social movements, and contemporary engagements with the 19th century.
Year 3
You will follow four compulsory courses and you will write your Bachelor's thesis. You will choose free electives to further specialise in a theme that interests you.

Your foreign diploma must be equivalent to a Dutch high school (VWO) diploma or a higher-level diploma, such as, but not limited to the International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate, German Zeugnis der allgemeinen Hochschulreife and British GCE-A Level.
