Description

Students in the Senior Freshman (second) year may compete for a foundation scholarship, which will go into effect at the start of the student's third year. Up to ninety foundation scholars are elected annually on the basis of performance in the scholarship examination, which is usually held in the week before the start of the second term.

Foundation scholars are entitled to a range of privileges, as detailed in the Emoluments and Privileges section of the College Calendar

In addition to the tangible benefits held by Scholars, these scholarships are highly prestigious, conferring a lifelong status within the College. Successful candidates, those achieving an overall first class result in the examination for scholarship, are elected by the Board on Trinity Monday, which marks the beginning of the annual Trinity Week when the community celebrates high standards of achievement among students and staff.

Benefits

A foundation scholarship is tenured for five years, during which time the Scholar is entitled to free Trinity accommodation, their evening meal free of charge at Commons, a waiver of their tuition fees or student contribution (non-EU students’ fees are reduced by the value of EU fees) and a small annual stipend. Scholars are also entitled to use the post-nominal letters “sch.” after their name. This scholarship is a very prestigious and substantial award given to approximately 60 students each year.

Eligibility

  • Students in their Senior Fresh year are eligible to take the Foundation Scholarship examinations. In exceptional circumstances students may defer them to the following year.
