Description

Thanks to the generous support of alumni, friends, and faculty, the History Section is able to award scholarships to support an undergraduate student in good academic standing studying History.

Undergraduate scholarships and graduate scholarships help pay for tuition and fees, and other awards support travel and research.

Eligibility

  • Must have completed at least 12 hours of work at EMU. Must be full time student who has completed 9 hours of history if a junior or 15 hours of history if a senior.
  • Be a major or minor in a History Section program: History, Social Studies and History for Secondary Education, Social Studies and Political Science for Secondary Education, Social Studies and Geography for Secondary Education, Social Studies and Economics for Secondary Education, History and Geography for Secondary Education, African Studies, Area Studies-Latin America, Area Studies-Middle East and North Africa, Asian Studies, Continental European Studies, Religious Studies, and Social Studies.
  • Have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 including Fall classes.
  • Have completed at least three History courses, two of which must be from EMU. (The two EMU History classes must be completed by the time you apply.)
  • Be a junior or senior next year, registered for at least 12 semester hours at EMU during either Fall or Winter.
  • Students working for a second Bachelor degree or post-Bachelor certification are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to those working on their first Bachelor’s degree.

The three parts of the application are:

Two Letters of Recommendation sent directly by faculty members. Allow reasonable time for faculty to write letters for you. At least one letter should be from a History faculty member. Any others may be from either History or another academic department. 

The Application for History Section Scholarships (Google Form).

The Essay (Upload in the Google Form).

Write your essay carefully. It must be between 400-500 words. Content and style are important in judging your application. Include references to your interest in historical studies now and for the future.

In your essay, you should address the following questions:

Why are you applying for a History Section scholarship?

Why are you interested in the discipline of history?

What are your future career plans?
