The award was established together with the Dr. Whitney Gordon Scholarship by Dr. Vaneeta-marie D'Andrea to honor the Gordons, both of whom were excellent teacher-scholars at Ball State University.

The purpose of the award is to honor and assist students who demonstrate a history of or interest in community service and disadvantaged populations.

The Dr. Hilda Gordon Scholarship is awarded to a student in the Department of Psychological Science in even years and the Dr. Whitney Gordon Scholarship is awarded to a student in the Department of Sociology in odd years.
