Description

Johns Hopkins University is proud to launch the Cummings Scholars Program—an expansion of the highly impactful Baltimore Scholars Program established in 2005.

The expanded cohort program is named after the late Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, who held strong and meaningful connections to the Hopkins community, the Baltimore community, as well as to Washington, DC. Congressman Cummings’ commitment to community, demonstrated personal and positional leadership, focus on expanding opportunity for others, and his strong belief in investing in our nation’s future through our youth, serve as the Program’s guiding foundational elements.

Building on the exceptional history and opportunities of the Baltimore Scholars Program, the Cummings Scholars Program will maintain the university’s commitment to Baltimore City Students while adding a cohort of students from Washington, DC, expanding Hopkins’ recognition and amplification of talented students across our local region. The Cumming Scholars Program will leverage the established core elements of the Baltimore Scholars Program to ensure that Scholars from both cities benefit from individual and cohort leadership development opportunities, a guided pathway to pursue their passions, and signature experiences that facilitate meaningful connections with local and national leaders across disciplines.

Benefits

This cohort experience offers a generous, two-tiered financial aid program that recognizes high-achieving Baltimore City and Washington, DC public school, and public charter school, graduates from families that earn up to $150,000 and have typical assets.

As part of their selection and full participation as Cummings Scholars, students receive financial aid to support their enrollment and success at Hopkins as follows:

For families making $80,000 or less:

The scholarship covers full cost of attendance, including tuition, housing and meals, fees, books, and other associated costs. Students also receive an annual start-up grant of $1,500.

For families making $80,000-$150,000:

Family contribution is capped at 10 percent of total family income.* For example, a Cummings Scholar whose household income was $100,000 would be asked to pay about $10,000 toward their education each year, and the scholarship would meet the remaining cost.

Eligibility

To be considered for the scholarship, students must:

  • Be graduates of a Baltimore City or Washington, DC public school or public charter school.
  • Have been a Baltimore City or Washington, DC resident and attended a Baltimore City or DC public school or public charter school for at least 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.
  • Be a full-time, first-year, and first-time degree-seeking student and submit all required financial aid documents by the deadline (Note: If you would like to request a waiver for the CSS PROFILE, please contact Student Financial Support).
