Description
Professor H Oritsejolomi Thomas was a former medical student at the University of Birmingham and the first Nigerian to be admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He specialised in facial reconstructive & plastic surgery.
This award has been generously funded by his son Victor Awadagin Thomas, also an alumnus of the University of Birmingham, in his memory.
Benefits
An annual £2,000 scholarship for Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic undergraduate MBChB student who are eligible for Home fees.
Eligibility
Eligible students will meet the following conditions. The student who scores the highest points will receive the award. In the event of two or more students scoring the same number of points, the student who attended the least well performing school/college for A-levels will be awarded the scholarship.
- Home student (student classified as ‘Home for Fees’ at the programme start date) – no points allocated.
- Ethnicity – points allocated as follows based on the ethnicity categories provided at the time of registration.:
Black or Mixed (Black/Black British – Caribbean; Black/Black British – African; Other Black background, Mixed - White and Black Caribbean, Mixed - White and Black African, Other Mixed Background) – 5 points.
Other Asian and Minority Ethnic (Asian/Asian British – Indian; Asian/Asian British – Pakistan; Asian/Asian British – Bangladesh; Chinese; Other Asian background; Mixed – White and Asian; Arab) – 3 points.
- Home POLAR 4 Quintile – Q1 = 10 points, Q2 = 8 points, Q3 = 6 points, Q4 = 2 points, Q5 = 1 point.
- Contextual School (identified using the criteria described on the MBChB admissions webpage for identifying contextual applicants) – 5 points
