Russian
The Department of Modern European Languages (now European Studies) at the University Of Ibadan was one of the first departments created by the new University of Ibadan in 1962. French, Russian and German were first set up in the Faculty of Arts of the then University College Ibadan (UCI) during the 1959/60 session with two lecturers in charge.
Arabic Language and Literature
In 1961, an Arabic unit was established in the University of Ibadan to assuage the desire of scholars who were desirous of accessing information on the history of North African societies most of which were written or documented in Arabic. From 1950 to 1964 under this scheme, the Department conducted B.A. Honours as well as the earlier established Intermediate and B.A. General courses. These years also witnessed a gradual increase of staff members from 2 to 11. The Classics programme is offered at the University Of Ibadan.
Communication and Language Arts
The Department of Communication and Language Arts originally began in 1964/65 as a service centre, a Reading Centre, to impart study skills to new students. It transformed into Department of Language Arts in 1975, and later Department of Communication and Language Arts. The Communication and Language Arts programme is offered at the University Of Ibadan.
English
It was one of the most heavily subscribed subjects and the majority of the B.A.(General) Arts graduates of the University Of Ibadan had to pass through the corridors of this Department. The Honours degree programme in English was introduced in 1952. Ever since its inception, the programme has produced some of the most outstanding men of letters in the country today.
Philosophy
The Department offers courses leading to the award of the B.A. (Single Honours) in Philosophy. The single honours programme is designed for specialists who may or may not wish to embark upon graduate studies in Philosophy. The Philosophy programme is offered at the University Of Ibadan.

The Department of Religious Studies came into being at the inception of the University College, Ibadan, in 1948. It began by offering one of the subjects for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) General Degree of the Faculty of Arts in special relationship with the University of London, United Kingdom.
