Christian Joseph Willenberg was the first founder of this university. In 1705 he seek permission from Emperor Leopold I for teaching engineering sciences . It was granted in 1707. He started teaching 12 students in his flat. The number of students rose to 200 in 1779. Lately Jan Ferdinand Schor became the successor. The Prague polytechnic became a technical university in 1863.
CTU currently has eight faculties (Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Science and Physical Engineering, Architecture, Transportation Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Information Technology) and about 21,000 students.For the 2016/17 academic year, CTU offers its students 119 study programmes and 442 fields of study within these programmes. CTU educates modern specialists, scientists and managers with knowledge of foreign languages, who are dynamic, flexible and able to adapt rapidly to the requirements of the market.
Research is carried out at all eight faculties, and also at the university institutes: the Klokner Institute, the Masaryk Institute of Advanced Studies, and the Institute of Technical and Experimental Physics.
Through the Student Grant Competition, we provide funding for research and development projects carried out by students in PhD and master study programmes. We provide information, advisory and administrative services for team leaders and participants in Czech and international research projects. We help in popularizing scientific findings and in technology transfer through active participation of scientific teams in fairs and seminars.

There are approximately 8,000 students annually, local and international to be accommodated. Rule number one is that each fresher – new student shall get a place/bed. With this rule it is not possible to provide separate room at the beginning of the year. After the first semester you can get a separate room or other dorm.It is common to have one or two Kitchen rooms equipped with fridge, refrigerator, microwave, cooker, big table and chairs and cutlery. Internet is available at all dormitories in each room. Usually it costs 800 CZK /41 USD for semester. Linen are changed every 2–3 weeks, for free. Each dorm has a “laundromat” for personal things washing.
The Library provides access to basic electronic information sources, that cover the scientific areas and fields of study that are investigated at CTU.The Library has been building up a specialized fund of printed and electronic documents. Information about the fund and about further services connected with the CTU fund can be found in the CTU online catalogue.
There are several Czech Technical University campuses, and several other buildings that are used by the faculties of the university for teaching, research and other purposes.Most of the buildings are in Prague, but some are outside Prague, too. CTU has 8 faculties, and their buildings are mainly located in Prague 6 (Dejvice main camp) and/or in the city centre. The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering is located at Kladno, 30 km north-west of Prague.
They are the main organizer of the CTU sports teams. Under their leadership, their sports teams (floorball, football, volleyball, basketball, handball, etc.) have won medals in national and international events (Czech Academic Games, SellGames, EuroMilano).Each year, they organize a competition for the best athletes of CTU, who are awarded sports scholarships.
A university is more than just a place for studying and for systematic preparation for a future career. It also provides a time when unlimited opportunities are offered. The CTU Student Union gives everyone a chance to make her or his dreams come true, to organize events, to have fun, to travel, to be creative, to rest, to learn new things, to take part in sports, and to do many other things. The CTU Student Union is a student organization with a large number of clubs that offer a very broad range of activities. At the same time, it is an independent organization with its own management, structure, rules and mission. It is represents the social interests of many people.
In 2015, CTU was ranked between 451st and 460th place out of 4,200 universities worldwide in the QS World University Rankings, which is published in the Times Educational Supplement.
As the physiotherapy is the profession which requires to have practical skills, the part of our studies, where we have practical classes, is less than 10%
The theoretical lessons are very handful and overall the programme teaches you a lot during a short period of time, you just need to adapt to the fact it really is time consuming - you spend most of the week at the school, but on the other hand you learn a lot, both from the practical and theoretical side. The university is great, but it could be better implementing more activities for international students.
