Marlboro College

Since our first day of operation on a small farm in southern Vermont, Marlboro has always run on a community-governance model. Every member of the college community has a say in what happens here, whether we’re maintaining the miles of wilderness trails that surround us or adding a group tutorial to the course list for the coming semester.

About

History

Marlboro was founded in 1946 on the basis of a simple yet ambitious idea: that smart, motivated students can make decisions for themselves, and design a college education that meets their unique needs.

Education

A “major” sounds, well, major—like a label you apply to yourself that’s hard to change. At Marlboro we expect your interests to change over time; the field of study you pursue can change too. You can combine fields, or even create new ones; it’s up to you to make the connections.

Our graduate offerings in education and management merge theory with practice in concentrations designed to anticipate emerging business and pedagogical needs. To maximize their growth, students are encouraged to be who they are—and become who they want to be—by learning, discussing, creating, and collaborating with others.

Career

Helping students channel their interests into meaningful work, starting in their first year and continuing after graduation.

We are committed to providing hands-on, personal attention that empowers students to explore, define, and realize their post-graduate goals. By integrating academic work, learning in the community, and career planning students think holistically about a well-designed future.

Services

Housing services

There are 9 residential buildings that are designated as On Campus: All the Way, Half Way, Happy Valley, Hendricks, Howland East, Howland West, Random North, Random South & Schrader. These buildings consist of single, double, and triple rooms. All residences have shared all gender bathrooms (unless otherwise noted by a Charter created by the residents). Howland, All the Way, Hendricks, and Random South all have kitchens. Most buildings have common rooms, furnished with couches, chairs and tables.

Each room has a desk, chair, twin bed, and dresser available for each occupant of the room. There is one wall mounted light per room. There is no storage space outside of one’s room and window sizes vary.

Library services

The Rice-Aron Library seeks to be not only a space that fosters the intellectual, creative, and social passions of the Marlboro community, but also to directly inspire that work. A hub for academic inquiry and engagement beyond the classroom, the Library houses a collection of 100,000 volumes, thousands of e-books, and journals.

Medical services

Whether you are a little homesick or need immunizations for your research trip to Senegal, the Total Health Center is the place to start. Conveniently located right in the middle of campus, adjoining the campus center, the health center is your one-stop shop for all things healthy. The facility includes a fitness center, health clinic, counseling facilities, a sunny meeting room, and a staff of friendly and helpful health care providers. These same staff are actively involved in health education, health events on campus, and the Health and Wellness Committee.

Student Life

Campus life

With a campus in the scenic Green Mountains, just 10 miles from the vibrant town of Brattleboro, Vermont, Marlboro College offers both community and the space to think.

Marlboro’s campus is so picturesque and inviting it is easy to call home. But the college works to foster a sense of connection between the campus and the wider community, from doing service projects in the area to sponsoring local events. As an intellectual center and professional development resource, Marlboro plays an essential role in the economic and cultural life of the southern Vermont region. We encourage you to explore these pages and come visit soon.

Student clubs

The Farm Committee started in 2002 as a group of students interested in growing organic vegetables. Now it is an established committee with an annual budget from Town Meeting, which regularly provides fresh produce for community dinners and other events.

Other groups are more informal, but just as persistent, such as the fencing club, which brings in a local, skilled swashbuckler to teach them how to thrust, paree, and blaspheme like a Medieval knight-errant. There have been groups that gather to play on the climbing wall together, knit together, play board games together, do contact improv together, play jazz together, meditate together, and ferment things together.

Accreditation
