When it opened the institution was called “The St. George Stake Academy.” It offered three years of high school and in 1912 the fourth year was added, allowing students to graduate from high school. In 1914, a year of teacher preparation was added and in 1916 the second year of college courses were begun. As a consequence of those changes the school’s name was changed to “Dixie Normal College.”
Established over a century ago in 1911 and built on the site of the first pioneer encampment in St. George, Dixie State University offers an affordable educational opportunity in a fantastic climate, with wonderful outdoor activities, and a picturesque setting among the red rocks of St. George and Washington County.
All undergraduate students constantly conduct research, using library holdings, laboratory experiments, clinical studies, and interviews with experts to complete the projects their professors assign them each semester.
Dixie State Undergraduate Research, however, encourages students to conduct involved research on single topics over extended periods and then present their findings in formal settings, such as conferences. Typically, the students pursuing these projects work closely with faculty mentors who not only provide their scholarly expertise but also practical advice on preparing and delivering conference presentations.
