Founded in 1865, Bowie State is the oldest Historically Black College/University in Maryland and one of the ten oldest in the country. It is also a diverse university whose 5,600 students, along with faculty and staff, represent many ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

About

History

The Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of the Colored People was organized in 1864 by 46 men, comprised of businessmen, lawyers, clergymen and Quakers, committed to opening schools to educate the state’s newly emancipated citizens. One of those men was Joseph M. Cushing, an outspoken champion for the education of the black population.

In addition to its 22 undergraduate majors, Bowie State offers 38 master's, doctoral, and advanced certification programs with specific focus on science, technology, business, education and related disciplines.

The Career Development Center provides career planning, job search assistance, and programs to assist students and alumni in making meaningful career, educational, and life choices. Services

Student services

The Bowie State University Office of Student Life is part of the dynamic student services team in Student Affairs.  We primarily provide activities and programs that complement students’ academic experience.  Programs include, but are limited to, lectures, speakers, panel discussions, cultural fairs and festivals, awareness days and concerts.

Housing services

The Bowie State University campus has all the resources that students need to make the most of their time at the University. They can get involved in more than 90 student clubs and organizations, including 12 fraternities and sororities within the Greek system.

Campus life

The campus offers seven residence halls and a number of dining options. The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life and other offices provide an array of support services to help students thrive, both academically and socially.

Sports facilities

Bowie State's athletes compete in the Northern Division of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, participating in the NCAA's Division II. They compete and/or train on-campus in Bulldog Stadium, the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex, and the A.C. Jordan Arena.

Student clubs

Student organizations help to support and enrich the academic experience for all students. There are over 50 clubs and organizations for students to get involved with, ranging from academic and spirituality focused organizations to student leadership, fraternities and sororities, student government, and commuter involvement. No matter what your interests are, there is a student organization for you here at Bowie State University!
