Birmingham-Southern College traces its roots back to 1856, the year the Alabama Legislature chartered Southern University as a Methodist institution; the following year, the school’s cornerstone was laid in Greensboro, Ala.

With close to 90 percent of our students living on campus, we want to make the Hilltop your home. We know that your room is more than just a spot to sleep and study--it's the place to discover and learn about yourself. Because community is key at Birmingham-Southern, we require all students to live on campus for their first two years. Most stay all four years because they enjoy it!
As an integral component of the College's Academic Resource Center (ARC), the library contains a variety of facilities for individual and group study and research. These include study carrels, seminar rooms, an electronic classroom, an auditorium with video and copmuter projection facilities, a video screening room, and a recently renovated and equipped learning technology center.
The Information Technology Department’s mission is to develop and maintain the infrastructure, facilities and services to provide for the effective use of technology systems to best serve students, alumni, faculty and staff within the mission of Birmingham-Southern College.
Health Services helps students maintain a healthy body and lifestyle. We can diagnose and treat minor illnesses and injuries, manage chronic health conditions, conduct lab testing and allergy injections, provide information about sexually transmitted infections and contraception, and administer seasonal vaccinations.

More than 90 percent of our students live on campus, making the Hilltop a place to live, eat, learn, and play together. It’s a place to follow your passions, and maybe find some new ones.
Participation in the activities and events scheduled, promoted, and administered by the Department of Physical Fitness and Recreation will prove to be beneficial to everyone on campus. All students, faculty members, and staff members are invited to take part in any of the programs offered. It is hoped that through this participation, everyone will develop qualities of leadership, cooperation, self-reliance, and a sense of fair play, as well as form friendships that will endure throughout the years.
