Although originally founded as the Mechanics’ Institute in 1827, the College in its present form was established in 1999 by a merger of York Sixth Form College and York College of Further and Higher Education; formerly York College of Arts and Technology.
York College is the largest educational provider for 16 - 19 year olds in the region, offering over 40 A Level subjects and 80 Vocational programmes. The College also delivers a range of Traineeships and Apprenticeships and works effectively with over 1,000 employers, helping them to recruit apprentices, provide bespoke training and achieve their individual and business goals.

York College welcomes those of all faiths and none. It has a designated room 'Oasis' set aside for personal reflection and prayer. The College hosts a series of well-attended 'Oasis' lectures exploring a range of ethical and spiritual issues. The College promotes Inter Faith Week with displays and/or activities in November each year.
The Spa is located on the ground floor off the main college atrium. Relax and enjoy our range of hair, beauty and natural holistic therapies. Our modern facilities include a sauna and steam capsule. We only use professional products such as Dermalogica, Wella and CND Vinylux.
With books and periodicals, DVDs, computers, and multifunction printers and photocopiers, our well-equipped Learning Centre is the ideal place in which to study and do research. Help desks are staffed by specialists who can help you to find out what you need to know and how to use the equipment.
Depending on the needs of the client, sports massage incorporates a variety of techniques including: kneading, soft tissue release, joint mobilisations, stretching and heat therapy. Sports massage has many benefits. In addition to feeling good, sports massage reduces the heart rate and blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow.
The College has state of the art facilities including the opening of a brand new Construction Skills Centre in September 2015,. The College houses the Alan Ayckbourn Theatre, Ashfields restaurant, hair and beauty salons, spa and nail bar, a 3G sports pitch and multi-use games area, engineering and construction workshops, art and design studios and a Learning Centre on three floors equipped with the latest technology. Some College facilities can also be hired out for commercial use and external events.
The £60million York College building offers state of the art sports facilities for hire to the public. We have the following facilities available to hire: Synthetic turf pitch (STP), Sports Hall and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA).
York College has been recognised as one of the leading Colleges in the country after it was judged ‘Outstanding’ by national inspection body Ofsted during an inspection which took place between 9th to 13th December 2013.
