Our world class research in sensors, flexible electronics, medical imaging, 5G communications and space systems informs our degrees to give you the best start in your career.
Studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering (with an industrial placement year) (Hons) you’ll study in our £12-million Future Technologies Labs, which provides a new space for building robots, programming embedded systems and digital signal processors, as well as state-of-the-art computer design and modelling suites. You will use our industry sponsored electronics laboratories, electrical drive systems, and control engineering laboratories and could be part of one of the Formula Student teams.
As you progress, you’ll focus on electrical or electronic engineering. You’ll get specialist training in applications ranging from semiconductor devices to electric motors for future green transport. We have dedicated academic advisers to support you during you time at University of Sussex , as well as a team of student mentors. You’ll also be welcomed into our active, student-run engineering societies, and benefit from our partnerships with:
- Women’s Engineering Society
- Engineers Without Borders UK
- Engineers in Business Fellowship.
The optional placement year gives you the chance to get real work experience for a year in industry, whilst still being supported by the department at University of Sussex.
Careers
Gain the skills for a career in engineering, and benefit from our links with companies like Jaguar, Siemens and IBM. The skills you develop on this course enable you to go into graduate jobs in sectors including:

General requirements
- International Baccalaureate: 32 points overall from the full IB Diploma.
- Higher Levels must include Mathematics, with a grade of 5.Either Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level will be accepted.
- European Baccalaureate: Overall result of at least 77%.
- Evidence of existing academic ability at a high level in Mathematics is essential (normally with a final grade of at least 8.0).
- You should have a broad range of GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.
