About this Degree

We offer a bold, forward-thinking curriculum that allows you to study a thousand years of literature in new and progressive ways. Offering a distinctive approach to a radical breadth of literary texts has made us one of the UK's most respected and exciting English departments.

Studying English and Art History (with a study abroad year) (Hons) at University of Sussex you'll experiment with writing and learn about its ability to transform the world we live in. You also explore a wide range of visual material – from painting and architecture to sculpture and dress. Our engaged and passionate tutors will guide you through each year of your degree.

Careers

 English is multidisciplinary and flexible. Art History is a practical humanities subject. Studying them together gives you transferable skills in critical analysis, research, communication, independent thinking and problem-solving. You’ll also understand how visual culture works – an essential skill in an image-saturated society.

You can use your English and Art History degree to go on to postgraduate study, or for careers in fields such as:

General requirements

  • International Baccalaureate: 30 -32 points overall from the full IB Diploma.
  • Higher Level subjects must include English.
  • European Baccalaureate: Overall result of at least 75% to 77%.
  • Successful applicants will need to achieve a final mark of at least 8/10 in English.
  • A-levels must include English Literature or the combined A-level in English Language and Literature
  • You should have a broad range of GCSEs 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in relevant subjects.
