The Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg which was first offered in 2005, is designed for people who have an interest in a career in a range of health related fields. The 3 year degree is:

  • An entry level degree, that is, the Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg graduate needs to continue with an Honours degree, postgraduate diploma or further training to be eligible for most careers.
  • A strong starting point for careers in  medical research; biokinetics; forensic science; corporate management; journalism;  pharmacology; public health.
  • NOT a medical degree:  to do medicine you must apply for the MBBCh.  As a graduate you would need to apply for the GEMP  (Graduate Entry Medical Curriculum).
  • NOT a pre med degree. In other words, if you do a BHSc you are NOT guaranteed a place in the GEMP neither do BHSc graduates receive preferential entry to the GEMP.

  • Sign and return Letter of Acceptance from the University to validate acceptance or accept offer on the Student Self Service Portal.
  • Valid Passport
  • Apply for Study Visa. (When collecting your Study Visa, check the date of issue and expiry. Ensure that the visa is issued for the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg or any of its variations
  • Apply for South African Medical Aid Cover with a registered South African Medical Aid Provider until 31 December (Refer to Medical Aid section under "Applying to Wits")
  • Travel arrangements to South Africa
  • Please carry a set of clothing in your hand luggage
