About

Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world.

The University of Bristol is a thriving centre for the study of modern languages and cultures, with a vibrant learning environment and state-of-the-art multimedia centre.

Italian language and culture have had a lasting impact on Europe, and Italy's innovative contributions to design, technology and fashion make it a major, global, commercial force.

Both departments encourage strong synergy between research and teaching, resulting in a vibrant learning environment for our students, as staff respond to ground-breaking research. French at Bristol has particular strengths in the relationship between visual, musical and literary cultures, while Italian has strengths in modern politics and culture as well as Italy's medieval and Renaissance heritage.

During the French and Italian programme from University of Bristol will achieve a high degree of fluency and accuracy in written and oral registers in both French and Italian, and study the history, literature and culture of countries where they are spoken. Many students find that studying two languages makes them stronger linguists.

In language classes, you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources.

You will spend half of your third year in a French-speaking country and the other half in Italy, undertaking study or work placements.
