About

The B.A. in Graphic Design (Hons) at University of Huddersfield focuses on the needs of the creative industry to help you build the skills you require to become a professional graphic designer.

Overview

The Graphic Design (Hons) program offered by University of Huddersfield has open doors to exciting new career paths while providing a unique and dynamic learning environment.

We’ll look at typography, layout, packaging, branding, advertising, motion and user-experience design to get you thinking and creating.

Give you the opportunity to develop your cultural awareness and your own visual language. Experimentation is key to understanding just what’s possible, so we’ll encourage you to try new things and take risks.

Our programme gives you the chance to understand how graphic design works in the wider world, and what kind of career prospects are out there, so we work with a range of theory and guest speakers; previous companies include the BBC, Designers Republic, Ministry of Sound and Playstation. You’ll have the chance to understand the factors out in the real world that are shaping the future of graphic design.

The course offers an optional one-year (36 week minimum) work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad. This will give you the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience, insight into your chosen career and open up your graduate employment prospects.

Students within the area of Graphic Design have previously taken up placement opportunities with companies including: Media21a - Leeds; Nestlé PTC Singen – Germany; Rubies UK – Chesterfield; Boom Magazine – Hong Kong; Creative Spark – Manchester and National Media Museum - Bradford.

Careers

Companies who have employed our talented students from the suite of Graphic Design and Animation courses include SEA, Thompson Brand Partners, the BBC and Google. You’ll be encouraged to take part in workshops, live briefs and international design competitions. It’s all structured to get you ready for employment once you’ve graduated. Recent graduates have gone on to work at companies such as Adam & Eve (London), Google (USA), and Studio Tilt (Netherlands). The course aims to help you develop the skills needed to work in design agencies and design consultancies, both in the UK and abroad, in roles such as graphic designer, graphic artist, digital designer, UX designer, typographer and design manager. You could also consider training as a teacher.
