Overview
You will build on fundamental concepts of structural engineering, including the application of scientific knowledge and modern engineering tools, to the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of major forms of infrastructure.
The Structural Engineering with Architecture programme at The University of Edinburgh draws on areas of particular expertise at Edinburgh including structural fire engineering, advanced geotechnical engineering and the use of modern construction materials.
This interdisciplinary programme is taught jointly with the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), part of Edinburgh College of Art.
You will spend approximately half your time taking Architecture classes in Year 1. The architecture component continues in later years, but the time spent in these classes is reduced as the focus shifts to core structural engineering courses.
Ties to industry
We have strong industrial engagement via our Industrial Advisory Board and industrial input to teaching, including our design projects.
There are opportunities for interaction with recent graduates working in industry, and we offer a close-knit, supportive community within which to develop your engineering skills.
Career opportunities
Studying engineering at the University of Edinburgh prepares you for a career as a professional engineer in the UK or abroad, and all courses meet the requirements of the UK professional engineering bodies.
On graduation from any of our programmes you will leave with a thorough, core knowledge, together with analytical, practical, design and communication skills, enabling you to join a design, production or research team - or move rapidly into management and leadership roles.
Alternatively, many of our graduates have gone on to work in other areas, including the civil service, education, the armed forces and the financial sector.
Accreditation
This programme is accredited as:
- Fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
- Partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
An accredited programme is needed to complete the educational base for CEng.
Programme Structure
- Year 1
Our programme will equip you with training in structural engineering combined with an appreciation of the architectural context. Engineers are creative problem solvers, adept at working in professional, interdisciplinary teams to tackle society’s ever-more complex challenges.
- Year 2
This year further develops your knowledge of core areas of engineering, combined with further study of architectural history, and includes study of Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Tools for Engineering Design.
- Year 3
You will now focus entirely on study of core materials, spanning structural engineering and in the architectural aspects of the construction and design of real buildings, supplemented by a choice of two options, one of which may be in architecture.
- Year 4
You will pursue advanced courses which deepen your fundamental knowledge in structural engineering and architecture, supplemented by a single option course.
