Interactive Media Design (IMD) at University of Washington Bothell provides students with an expansive understanding of the processes and methods involved in conceiving, creating, and evaluating technology-mediated experiences.

About

Interactive Media Design (IMD) students at University of Washington Bothell create media products ranging from video and immersive artworks to web-based and platform-specific apps while working in collaboration with their peers. With its interdisciplinary approach to interaction design and emphasis on studio practice, IMD enables students to develop creative solutions to complex problems. 

The two-year curriculum, grounded in an intensive cohort‐based learning environment, blends academic theory, human-centered design, artistic technique, process management approaches, and methods for gathering and analyzing critical metrics. 

IMD majors graduate with a design portfolio that prepares them for careers in the arts and industry, as well as for graduate study.  They are uniquely qualified to provide leadership across employment sectors concerned with interaction design in education, engineering, art, science, social media, and other forms of digital interactivity.

Academic Requirements

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

The IMD admissions committee looks for candidates who clearly articulate their interest in and capacity to learn to work with digital tools, to engage with art and design thinking, to think critically about interactive media, and to work collaboratively with others in a diverse cohort.
  • Design Portfolio
The IMD admissions committee will review individual samples of creative and/or interactive media work and experience.  A portfolio of work samples is useful since it gives the committee a sense of the range of an applicant’s interests, skills, and capacities.
