Possible careers
Graduates of the Health Information Management and Systems program at The Ohio State University are eligible for professional certification as a registered health information administrator and for additional certifications in specialty areas such as clinical coding, health care privacy and security, and quality improvements.
One hundred percent of graduates from the Ohio State HIMS program passed the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam in 2012, 2013 and 2015, and the pass rate for students who exercised the early test option among 2014 graduates was 100 percent.
As a member of the management team, the registered health information administrator works with other health care professionals—physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, administrators, researchers, information systems specialists, educators, lawyers and others—and may work in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, out-patient centers, long-term care facilities, consulting firms, government agencies, law firms and insurance companies, medical device/pharmaceutical/electronic health records companies or sales, and data analytics firms.
A registered health information administrator may manage others, but he or she may also work in specialty areas such as information systems, quality improvement, cancer registry, corporate compliance, vendor companies and consulting firms. In addition, a registered health information administrator may be responsible for the privacy and confidentiality of patient information.
