Each semester of the Materials Science Engineering programme at VIA University College has an overall theme that shows you different perspectives within the beautiful world of materials. You will also gain insight into modern processing technology so you can help optimise techniques, product design, innovation, business development, financial considerations and production and supply chain consideration in manufacturing companies.

Each subject helps you develop a deeper understanding of the challenges of the particular theme. Each semester concludes with a semester project, enabling you to work with the theme in companies all over the world.


After successfully completing your studies, you will be able to work as a textile engineer, plastics engineer, within innovation and new product development, quality and environmental management, purchasing or something else entirely. 

As a material engineer, you will have the skills to enter a wide range of careers.

For instance, you can work with innovation, product development, quality and environmental management, research and development on new materials, purchasing new materials and products and consultancy on materials and processes.

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. General Requirements

  • Upper secondary school leaving certificate/high school exam or
  • Danish Admission course for Engineering programmes or
  • The International and the European Baccalaureates

The above certificates must provide evidence of:

  • Mathematics equivalent to a Danish B-level (min. 250 hours) and
  • Physics equivalent to a Danish B-level (min. 200 hours) or geoscience equivalent to a Danish A-level (min. 375 hours) and
  • Chemistry equivalent to a Danish C-level (min. 75 hours) or biotechnology equivalent to a Danish A-level (min. 375 hours)

Living costs for Herning

  • 5500 - 8500 DKK/month
    Living Costs

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.


There is no tuition fee for the following students:

  • Citizens of the European Union (EU)
  • Citizens of EEA countries (Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland)
  • Citizens of Switzerland
  • Students who are granted permanent residency or a time-limited permit with the possibility of permanent residence in Denmark
  • Students who exchange with Danish students as part of a bilateral agreement with an educational institution abroad.
  • Students who are granted a residence permit under §9c, paragraph 1 of the Aliens Act as the accompanying child of a non-Dane with a residency permit issued under section 9a of the Aliens Act.
