Overview
The Arts in Asian American Studies program offered at San Francisco State University provides students with a broad range of knowledge of the diverse Asian American population through disciplinary and interdisciplinary inquiries and analyses of Asian American history, literature, arts, and communities. Under advisement, students may use two specific courses to fulfill the history and government requirements and may use an unlimited number of units in Asian American Studies courses to count towards General Education. Students majoring in Asian American Studies are encouraged to study a modern Asian language or related courses.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Gain an interdisciplinary understanding of the histories, cultures, and racialization of Asian Americans.
- Apply course concepts and critical theories and methodologies to identify the structural and ideological forces that shape the lives of Asian Americans.
- Apply the skills and knowledge acquired toward the self-determination and empowerment of Asian American communities.
- Develop values of social justice, equity, activism, and respect for differences.
- Construct evidence-based and persuasive oral and written arguments with proper citations and support from multiple forms of knowledge, including community and academic resources, that communicate what students have discovered.
Career paths
Both baccalaureate and master’s degrees can be used to enhance work in Asian American communities, enhance career opportunities in the Pacific Rim areas, prepare for teaching and other professional careers, and prepare for doctoral studies or other professional degrees.
