Overview
Our programme in Japanese Studies from The Chinese University of Hong Kong thus immerses students in a cross-cultural experience through our unique course offerings and study-abroad opportunities, and cultivates cultural sensitivity, global awareness and intercultural communication.
Key features
The major programme in Japanese Studies is an intensive and rigorous undergraduate programme that includes both culture and society courses, as well as language courses at various levels. We provide a wide range of courses to meet student needs, including Japanese culture, history, pop-culture, literature, management and philosophy. In Years 1 and 2, students in the major programme take core courses in Japanese culture and society, Japanese language, and field-research methods, and students begin to formulate ideas for their final-year project (FYP). Year 3 is spent in Japan studying as an exchange student at one of our 21 partner universities in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido and Kyushu, while also conducting original research for their final-year project. In Year 4, the students return to CUHK to write their final-year project/thesis, and take elective courses in Japanese studies, along with other courses required by the University.
We also offer a Double Major Programme in Japanese Studies and History, which students can complete in four years. The Department also provides opportunities for local and overseas summer internship programmes, and short-term summer exchange programmes. Various scholarships are available from the University and Department for students taking our major.
