The Genetics (Hons) programme from the University of York encompasses the molecular studies of genes and genetic engineering. You’ll learn about fundamental processes like gene expression, the impacts of genetic engineering and the role of rapidly developing technologies.
You’ll examine different systems and scales whether in the field of human genetics and disease through to population genetics. The increasing knowledge of the human and other genomes will continue to have a great impact on biotechnology, medicine and conservation, and by completing a degree in genetics you’ll be well-placed to make a positive impact across a broad range of areas.
Careers and skills
A degree in Biosciences provides an excellent basis for science or health-related careers, and for a wide range of other occupations and professions from management and finance, to journalism and teaching. Studying Biosciences at Masters level will develop your critical thinking and research skills, and prepare you to be competitive for entry into relevant postgraduate degree courses, and in particular PhD study.

All of the undergraduate courses are accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. As a graduate, you will meet in-part the academic and experience requirement for membership and chartered biologist (CBiol).

- 85% overall including 8.5 in Biology and a second science or mathematics subject.
