As a data science major, you'll not only build a mathematically and statistically rigorous foundation to extract meaningful data from large, complex datasets but through seminars and practicum, you'll gain hands-on experience.
You'll graduate with the skills and knowledge to meet the demand for highly trained and skilled data science experts.
The Data Science program from Portland State University brings together courses from mathematics, statistics, computer science and application areas. Many of our faculty are leading researchers in computational mathematics and statistics, and together with industry experts, will bring their expertise to your classes.
Our program offers lower-division training in calculus, linear algebra, computer science, and statistical methods, as well as basic programming skills in python, R and/or MATLAB. In the Data Science Seminar, guest lecturers will introduce examples and case studies and discuss ethics and bias in data science.
As you progress, you'll take specialized classes in statistics, large-scale data algorithms, computer science, optimization, and scientific computing for various hands-on data science applications.
