The Experiential Learning Certificate (EXPL) program in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at South Dakota State University is committed to providing a high impact liberal arts education that allows students to grow personally, develop high-demand workforce skills, and adapt quickly to future needs.

Overview

Experiential learning is “hands on” learning that intentionally blends classroom knowledge with real-world tasks. Learn alongside professors, professionals, community leaders and fellow students. Education

The Experiential Learning Certificate (EXPL) program at South Dakota State University is a fun, creative way to build hands-on learning into major and minor requirements. Students graduate with at least five experiences, an electronic portfolio, and documentation on the transcript that sets them apart. 

Programme Structure

  • Integrative Capstone Experience
Complete a three credit capstone related to the field of study. Credits: 3
  • Electives
Select a minimum of 12 credits from at least 3 categories below. Contact the Experiential Learning Coordinator to review the current list of approved courses for each category. Other Courses may be contracted for EXLN credit with approval of the EXLN Coordinator and the course instructor. Extra-curricular activities, volunteer experiences and regular paid employment may not be used for credit to fulfill certificate requirements. Qualifying courses will be noted on the student’s official transcript.

General requirements

  • Applicants should have an above average academic record at least equivalent to a "B-" average (2.60 out of 4.00), or be in the top 60% of their class with suitable academic preparation for the intended major.
  • The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), while not required, is encouraged and strongly recommended for freshman applicants. Students who graduated from U.S. high schools must submit an SAT score.
  • Academic Transcripts need to be originals or official certified true copies. If your transcripts are not in English, certified true translations must be attached. All upper secondary school-level work need to be demonstrated through your transcripts. It is common for applicants to submit transcripts prior to the completion of their final year of secondary school. If you must submit transcripts prior to completion, please indicate your expected graduation date.
