Concentrated studio work engages students in contemporary practices, and advanced technical proficiencies that enhance idea-based constructional methods while developing a personal identity through utilitarian, sculptural, and design applications.
As students advance through the program they take an active role in studio operations, including materials research, glaze calculation, and kiln/firing technology. The immediacy of working with clay offers opportunities for model making in design build professions. Ceramics processes also offer opportunities to bridge technology in agronomy, design, engineering, and medical fields.
The Ceramics Certificate at South Dakota State University is a stand-alone program and may be taken by any student regardless of major or may be selected by Studio Art majors as part of their degree. This certificate prepares you for entry-level positions as a studio technician, production potter, or dealing with ceramics education, gallery, or retail settings.

General requirements
- Applicants should have an above average academic record at least equivalent to a "B-" average (2.60 out of 4.00), or be in the top 60% of their class with suitable academic preparation for the intended major.
- The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), while not required, is encouraged and strongly recommended for freshman applicants. Students who graduated from U.S. high schools must submit an SAT score.
- Academic Transcripts need to be originals or official certified true copies. If your transcripts are not in English, certified true translations must be attached. All upper secondary school-level work need to be demonstrated through your transcripts. It is common for applicants to submit transcripts prior to the completion of their final year of secondary school. If you must submit transcripts prior to completion, please indicate your expected graduation date.
