Overview

The Electrical Power Engineering (Hons)  course from London South Bank University  provides insight into these and prepares the graduate to meet the challenges of advanced power engineering systems.

It offers common modules at level 4 setting the background and covers electrical machines, power electronics and electrical services to buildings etc. at L5 to serve as an intermediate for more advanced treatment of related topics at L6. At L6 more detailed power systems engineering, electrical energy converters as well as systems for (built) environmental services are covered alongside a comprehensive module on renewable energy.

The combination of these modules will enable graduates to acquire knowledge of, and skills to apply, in the modern Electrical Power engineering area, which encompasses not only traditional power systems and electrical energy conversion but also electrical systems in building services area and the use and application of power electronics in designing systems for renewable energy.

The BEng (Hons) Electrical Power Engineering programme aims to produce graduates who have acquired and can use a broad base of active knowledge in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Power Electronic applications in the areas of energy conversion and renewable energy technologies, Electrical building services etc, and the skills necessary to update, extend and deepen it for career development or further study.

Employability

The UK energy industry adds a net value to the economy of more than £15 billion per year with electricity sales alone amounting to around £100 million per day. Key players in this industry range from large national grid operators to regional distribution and power generation companies. Meeting the challenges of using renewable energy to reduce the problems of climate change means that there has never been a more exciting time to be involved in the power and related applications industry.

Career prospects are excellent in this growing engineering sector. Graduate electrical engineers command high salaries and are often involved in cutting-edge projects. You could work for industry players ranging from large national grid operators to regional distribution, and power generation companies, and the building services industry.

This course is the first step to becoming a chartered engineer – and remember Chartered Engineers typically earn more than their colleagues.
