Overview

You can develop into a professional jazz composer under the guidance of Finland’s leading musicians and international top names.

You will learn to express yourself in your own unique way through your compositions.

You will learn how to combine the form, harmony and melody of jazz music. Through your compositions and arrangements, you will come up with creative solutions for challenges concerning rhytmic jazz expression.

Jazz composition students complete studies in ensemble playing, aural skills, rhythm and arrangement that support their major subject. You will also complete courses of your own choice as well as studies in another instrument.

The Jazz composition programme at the University of the Arts Helsinki also includes language and music technology studies.

Opportunities

As a student, you will receive the necessary knowledge and skills in African-American music, music culture and performance practices to become a professional. Upon graduating, you may take on demanding roles as a musician, orchestra conductor and pedagogue.
