The central aim of the Philosophy with English (Hons) programme at New College of the Humanities in partnership with Northeastern University is to teach you the relevant conceptual tools, skills, and knowledge to read the texts we call literature, and all other uses of language, with greater acuity, penetration and pleasure, for the rest of your life.

Overview

The Philosophy with English (Hons) programme at New College of the Humanities allows you to investigate expressions of the central questions in human life. You’ll learn how to deal with these issues in a clear, precise and rigorous way, and will develop skills to deal with abstract critiques and principles and to engage in text-based analysis of the arguments of philosophy and literature.

Programme aims

The programme aims to:

  • cultivate an engaged appreciation of the central questions of philosophy;
  • foster extensive knowledge and understanding of the ideas and arguments of major figures in the history of western philosophy, and the challenges these face;
  • teach students the languages, patterns, and concepts, of elementary formal logic;
  • provide knowledge of literature.
