The Health Care Studies programme from Swansea University has been designed for Health Care Support Workers to complete a recognised formal level four (CQFW4) qualification in keeping with the current Welsh Government initiative ‘Developing Excellence in Healthcare’ for a skills and career framework for HCSW’s.


This Health Care Studies programme from Swansea University will enable you to develop personally and professionally and could make you eligible for consideration of promotion to a higher band within the Knowledge and Skills Framework operating in the NHS or eligibility to apply for year two of the Pre-registration Nursing qualification. 


Successful completion of the course will give you the opportunity to develop your career in healthcare through promotion to a higher band or eligibility to apply for the second year of our Pre-Registration Nursing course. 

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • Our excellent facilities in the College of Human and Health Sciences include a realistic clinical suite so you can put your theoretical knowledge into practice.
  • The Certificate will be delivered using blended learning including Work Based Learning and attendance at taught modules.
  • This course offers some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers.

General requirements

  • To apply for this course you will need to be in healthcare employment  and gain employer consent before applying to the College.
  • Your clinical area of work must be an audited learning environment and you must have mentors that meet the NMC Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice.
  • You will need to identify a mentor before starting the course and will need to have been working in a relevant health or social care position for at least two years, have a sound academic background and able to write a 500 word statement expressing why you should be considered for the course.
