This programme is primarily designed for people who wish to further their career with a degree but who do not have the academic qualifications for entry onto our other BSc programmes delivered without a Foundation Year. 

This Building Control with Foundation Year (Hons) programme at University College of Estate Management is primarily designed for people with an interest in building technology, building standards, fire safety, inclusive environments and energy conservation, who wish to further their career with a degree. Many of our students often already work in, or are associated with, the property and building sectors. Such employment is desirable but not mandatory.

The following provide a range of the types of careers that students may pursue after completing this programme:

  • Local authority building control surveyor, working with architects, engineers and contractors to ensure building designs meet the required standards and ensuring these standards are adhered to during the course of construction
  • Private sector building control surveyor, working with architects, engineers and contractors to ensure building designs meet the required standards and ensuring these standards are adhered to during the course of construction
  • Advising on specific aspects of the building regulations, such as advice on energy conservation, fire safety management strategies or accessibility

Accreditation

Accreditation by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and other related international bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) will be sought but is not guaranteed.

  • Mathematics plus two other GCSE’s at grade C or above (Grade 4 for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England) or equivalent
