Mechatronics gives you the opportunity to become a professional Engineer with sound analytical proficiency in embedded systems, digital electronics, dynamics and control, complemented by the 3D-design and management skills necessary to work in modern industry.

Mechatronics covers the integration of mechanical, electronic and intelligent control sub-systems to realise a complete system, which may be a product, machine or process. The multidisciplinary nature of Mechatronics employs design principles, processes, models, toolsets and philosophy unique to Mechatronics Engineers which enable design and development of simpler, more economical and reliable systems.

The duration of the MEng programme is four years and the BEng programme is three years. At the end of year three you have the option of exiting with a BEng degree or continuing for a further year, subject to meeting the progression requirements for the MEng degree.

At the end of year two, you have the option of undertaking a placement year in industry, which will extend the respective programme by a further year.

Multidisciplinary engineers are sought after in industry, and can expect significantly enhanced job prospects worldwide.You could work in industries including aerospace, defence and energy as well as manufacturing industrial and domestic products, pharmaceuticals, furniture and foods. This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer. Students who successfully graduate with this degree may, with the appropriate further learning, meet the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

General Requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Mathematics or equivalent, plus one of the following:
  • Normally 120 UCAS points from at least two A-levels or equivalent, including one of the following subjects: Mathematics or Physics at grade C or
  • Engineering or Physics BTEC National Diploma/ Extended Diploma at DDM 
  • English and Mathematics GCSE required as a separate qualification as equivalency is not accepted within the Access qualification. We will normally require students to have had a break from full-time education before undertaking the Access course
  • International Baccalaureate: 30+ points with Mathematics or Physics at higher level
