Overview

The Geography (Human) (Hons) degree offered at Staffordshire University explores the historical and current economic, social and cultural processes that shape our societies and ourselves.

You will explore processes such as colonialism, capitalism and globalisation that have shaped and continue to shape human geographies.

Topics such as urban marginalisation, smart city initiatives, regeneration and transformation, and geographies of the economy and the global financial system are studied to better understand our future.

The course programme is delivered by enthusiastic staff who are all experts in their field. You’ll study in a department with high levels of student satisfaction, small class sizes, free fieldwork provision, friendly and supportive staff and excellent facilities.

Programme Structure

  • In Years 1 and 2, you’ll develop your knowledge of globalisation and global economic development, urban sustainability and urban regeneration, social and cultural geography, and environmental issues. You’ll also learn a wide range of social research techniques, and explore field investigation, data analysis, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • In Year 3, you’ll take a number of specialist human geography modules to develop an advanced knowledge of your subject area, such as Global Cities, and Food, Agriculture and Sustainability. You’ll also complete either a dissertation or a work placement project.
  • Our generous fieldwork provision is included in the cost of your tuition fees, so you’ll pay nothing extra. In Year 1, you’ll attend a residential weekend field course and have a number of regional field days. In Year 2, you will have a week-long UK residential field course, and in Year 3 you’ll go on a week-long international residential trip.
