University rank #198 (WUR) , DC,
The Fine Art Photography program offered by George Washington University at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design focuses on the roles that lens-based media play in contemporary life. Students begin their first year with four foundation courses: Drawing and Surface, Form and Materials, Time and Light, and Interaction.

In subsequent years, they receive an intensive grounding in the current concerns of photo-based art while refining their technical skills in digital photography, video, and traditional darkroom processes. Through a rigorous conceptual and studio-based curriculum, students develop their own individual styles and subject matter.

When applying to the BFA program, applicants should submit approximately 20 images of artwork and/or up to 10 minutes of time-based work.  While applicants may submit a variety of single images to show competency in multiple media and approaches to art-making, it is most helpful to see at least one larger series that demonstrates how an idea has been developed over an extended period of time.

In the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fine Art Photography program at George Washington University, students receive an intensive grounding in the current concerns of photo-based art while refining their technical skills and developing their own individual styles and subject matter.

What can I do in the Fine Art Photography field?

Graduates of the program may continue practicing as independent artists. Some go on to earn their MFA degrees in order to open up teaching opportunities, while others have secured positions at National Geographic Books, Adamson Editions Studio, Aperture, Ai Weiwei’s Berlin Studio and the International Center of Photography. Additionally, there are many graduates who have started independent businesses in the professional photography field.
