The Special Education program of University of Wisconsin - Whitewater includes three semesters of coursework and fieldwork prior to one semester supervised student teaching experience in an approved special education setting with a certified special education teacher. The program is competency based and organized around national (Council for Exceptional Children/CEC) and Wisconsin teacher certification standards. The program is designed to prepare special education teachers to teach students with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and emotional/behavioral disabilities.
Although the candidate earns a Cross Categorical BSE, there are two emphases that students can select: Cross Categorical with Intellectual Disabilities Emphasis (CC: ID) or Cross Categorical with Emotional Behavioral Disabilities/Learning Disabilities Emphasis (CC: EBD/LD). To teach grades 1-12, teacher candidates earn the Wisconsin Middle Childhood to Early Adolescence and Early Adolescence to Adolescence certificates in each area of certification.
