About

Education is much more than just learning your ABCs – it plays an essential role in society.

That's why our Education Studies degree incorporates a range of subject disciplines: psychology, philosophy, history and sociology to explore education in a modern inclusive society. It allows you to understand how people develop and learn over their lifetime. It also considers the nature of knowledge, along with a critical engagement in ways of knowing and understanding this important and evolving area.

Our degree investigates education in its broadest sense, providing a solid foundation in the theoretical frameworks of education. It will increase your knowledge of educational processes, systems and approaches, and the cultural, societal, political, historical and economic contexts. You will discover how to apply theory within current practices in education. All courses within the programme have practical skills embedded within them, so you will gain the opportunity to develop your presentation skills, problems solving and communication skills, along with investigating and researching your own projects.

One of the unique features of this degree is the opportunity to study social enterprise, which is a rapidly growing sector that is increasingly important in working with children and young people. You will learn the fundamentals and social impact of social enterprises and have the option to undertake a professional placement to further enhance your employability skills. This is an exciting and innovative opportunity that could see you set up your own social enterprise by the end of your degree and begin graduate life running your own business as a social entrepreneur.

This degree offers our graduates a flexible route to a challenging and rewarding career – our graduates pursue careers in: social enterprise; early years or primary teaching (after completing a one year PGCE); youth services; social care; language and linguistics (after post-graduate study); probation service; education administration; education research; community education; and careers service. The psychology courses within the programme enable you to apply for Masters in Psychology conversion courses, which will enable you qualify as an educational psychologist.

The aims of the programme are:
