University rank #67 (WUR) Leiden, Netherlands
Today, globalization makes us all aware of how closely we are connected to, and often dependent upon, the actions of people who are far distant from us. Human migration and economic liberalization have transformed local communities, bringing the seemingly “distant” into close proximity. We offer a bachelor degree in Human Diversity at the Leiden University.

Overview

Given these developments, how can we devise ways to share resources and negotiate conflicts— without succumbing to fear, xenophobia, racism, or violence? How can we understand the origins and consequences of human differences, be they defined by race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, or any number of other factors?

The Human Diversity major at Leiden University draws insights from the humanities and social sciences in order to help you address the global challenge of living together in peace and equitably in socially diverse communities.

This major might be for you if you are interested in the following questions:

  • How have grassroots social movements arisen in different times and places?
  • How have globalisation and technology changed the way people organise and develop group identities?
  • How have humans distinguished between “self ” and “other” worked to integrate newcomers?
