About

This Fashion Buying with Garment Technology (Hons) programme from De Montfort University has been created in response to industry demand for graduates with technical expertise in the clothing industry. It has been designed to develop your knowledge of product realisation through practical and theoretical sessions to learn about textile materials, production and garment fitness for purpose. 

You will learn about the life cycle of a product from concept stage through to delivery on to the shop floor, as well as key aspects of trading. There will be an opportunity to work on live projects with industry and hear from expert visiting lecturers. There is an option for a year’s industrial placement and an option to choose a language from second year.

This course is designed for students who are aiming for a career in the fashion industry, with broad career options that include fashion design, buying, merchandising, garment technology, product development, sourcing, and fashion marketing.

Graduate careers

This course is designed for students who are aiming for a career in fashion buying, and also offers broader career options which include fashion merchandising, visual merchandising, garment technology, sourcing, design, and fashion marketing. Students will be equipped to work in retail and the extended supply base.

Recent graduates have succeeded into careers at ASOS, Selfridges, Next, George, M&S, River Island, and Joules amongst many others.

Academic Requirements

A good portfolio and normally:

  • Art and Design Foundation or
  • 112 points from at least 2 A ‘levels and including grade C in Art and Design or
  • BTEC Extended Diploma DMM in an Art and Design related subject or
  • International Baccalaureate: 26+ Points including Art and Design
  • GCSEs - Five GCSEs grades A* - C  (9-4) including English Language or Literature at grade C/4 or above.
  • Access - Pass Access with 30 Level 3 credits at Merit in Art and Design and GCSE English (Language or Literature) at grade C/4 or above.
  • We also accept the BTEC First Diploma plus two GCSEs including English at grade C/4 or above (if required as part of our standard requirement).
