This degree includes varied course offerings focusing on specialized areas of study that integrate developmental health content and instructional strategies. The SHE curriculum is comprised of three areas of coursework: content, pedagogy & theory, and application. After meeting the School of Education’s entry-level requirements for admission into the teacher education program, health education majors complete their teacher training experience with a teaching practicum in the public schools. This program culminates with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education that offers an instructional specialization in Health Education, grades 5-Adult.
All certified teacher candidates must complete general studies requirements, a core of professional education courses, and their health education course-work. A collaborative completion of this degree along with that in physical education facilitates public school teaching employment in all of WV’s 55 counties. Most school districts seek educators possessing dual certifications in both Health and Physical Education with job openings generally posted as such. FSU is one of the few state-institutions providing professional teacher training in accredited Health and Physical Education programs.
