About

The International Relations major from Seoul National University aims to foster professional intellectuals who, armed with profound theoretical thinking and a broad outlook, are able to recognize and analyze the international politics of the real world.

Overview

Key Features

The International Relations major from Seoul National University, therefore, focuses on providing students with an insight into the relations among individuals, societies, and the international system through a curriculum that cultivates not only the knowledge of general social sciences and traditional international politics, but also the skill of scientific research and analysis of international political economy, diplomacy, military, and culture.

Thus, our curriculum is programmed to improve both the students’ professional knowledge and practical capabilities. Basic courses such as ‘Introduction to International Politics,’ ‘Korean Peninsula in World Politics,’ and ‘Diplomacy’ equip students with a fundamental outlook and a critical mind in viewing Korea in relation to its neighbors. On the other hand, historical courses such as ‘History of International Relations’ and ‘Korean Diplomatic History’ enable students to critically review the historical paths of both the general and the Korean international relations.

Further, courses such as ‘Theory of International Politics,’ ‘International Political Thought,’ ‘International Political Economy,’ and ‘International Culture’ teach students the various theories that can be applied to the reality of international relations. Moreover, courses like ‘Korean Foreign Policy,’ ‘U.S. Foreign Policy,’ ‘Chinese Foreign Policy,’ ‘Russian Foreign Policy,’ and ‘Japanese Foreign Policy’ allow students to become more familiar with not only the foreign policies adopted by our nation, but also by the ones around the Korean Peninsula. Lastly, courses such as ‘War and Peace,’ ‘Nationalism,’ and ‘International Communication’ are offered to encourage students to broaden their perspectives on the various international issues that influence our world.

Thus, all in all, the curriculum of International Relations Major is programmed to encourage the student to develop his or her abilities as a member of IR through vigorous research on various topics. We aim to continue nurturing talented young minds who will undertake an active role in various fields such as academia, social services, journalism, and global businesses.
