Overview

The Mission of Family and Consumer Sciences Education - Teacher Licensure (5-12) at Carson-Newman University is to provide pre-service teachers with the skills to empower students to manage challenges of living and working in a diverse, global, ever-changing society; to develop skills in decision making, problem solving, managing work and family, communication, technology, leadership, citizenship and workplace readiness; and to select and prepare for related careers while seeking academic excellence and Christian integrity.

Learning outcomes

This emphasis leads to licensure in the state of Tennessee to teach Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) for grades 6-12. FCS teachers teach courses with the focus on empowering individuals, strengthening families, and enabling communities through leadership development and courses in culinary, early childhood, teaching as a profession, fashion design, food science, interior design, nutrition, textiles, tourism and hospitality, social services, and many human services related careers.

Current projections indicate that there are three jobs nationally for every one FCSE major graduating from college. This demand for teachers is expected to continue with the most severe need in rural areas. We are one of only four schools in the state that offer this endorsement and we are the only private school in Tennessee to do so.
