Make a difference to the lives of animals, right from day one of the Applied Animal Science with Therapy (Hons) degree from Hartpury College. Learn in our labs and study spaces with our on-site animal collection. It includes meerkats, prairie dogs and wallabies.

Overview

Gain experience in our canine and equine animal therapy centres. Develop essential business skills and work with a range of animals on site. You’ll also undertake scientific research in an area you’re passionate about.

As part of the Applied Animal Science with Therapy (Hons) degree from Hartpury College you’ll gain essential experience in our Canine Hydrotherapy Centre and Equine Therapy Centre. Alongside developing valuable therapeutic knowledge, you’ll experience multi-disciplinary teams -  including veterinary professionals, hydrotherapists and nutritionists - working towards the optimal health or performance of an animal. You’ll gain insights into different career options as well valuable knowledge and experience, ready for employment.

Your first year will introduce you to fundamental areas of animal therapy including working with both the animal and human. You’ll study animal anatomy and physiology, with particular emphasis on the muscoskeletal system, animal genetics, health, disease and nutrition. On the human side, you’ll develop your expertise in effective scientific communication, both oral and written, as well as working with colleagues and animal owners in a therapy-type setting.

You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a work placement in industry as part of your degree, study business management subjects and undertake research to uncover new knowledge in an area you’re passionate about. Students across our animal degrees often co-publish with lecturers and present their research at industry conferences.

This course will equip you with a range of scientific animal therapy skills to prepare you for employment or further study. It will not qualify you to be an animal therapist or physiotherapist.

Industry opportunities

You’ll be able to gain experience in commercial therapy centres, as well as through a sandwich year in industry. We have strong industry connections, and host regular guests in lectures as well as professionals undertaking practical demonstrations. Recent activities have included clinical canine massage, physiotherapy assessments on canines, assessing and treating horses on the equine treadmill, as well as discussions about post-surgical management from veterinary professionals.

Graduate destinations

As an animal graduate you may go on to work in zoos, aquariums, wildlife parks, rescue, conservation or welfare centres. Studying an animal degree will also give you the transferable skills you need for other graduate careers. Recent graduate destinations have included:

  • GCSE - A minimum of 5 GCSE A* to C, (or 9 to 4 where numeric grades are being awarded) or equivalent, to include English Language and Mathematics.
  • A-level - Typical offer is BBC or equivalent. This must include a minimum of two A-levels including one in a Biological Science.
  • Vocational awards - Typical offer is a DMM in an Extended Diploma or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • We welcome students with equivalent qualifications, including Access and the International Baccalaureate.
