Overview
There are two paths you may wish to explore: medical sonography, and radiologic technology.
As a diagnostic medical sonographer, you’ll perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations and work under the guidance of physicians. You’ll employ ultrasound, or high-frequency sound waves, to detect and diagnose diseases in body organs and tissues.
About this program
As a Medical Sciences major at Edgewood College with a sonography concentration, you will complete three years of undergraduate academic study at Edgewood College. You’ll then apply to the School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (located in Madison) in the fall semester of your junior year. If admitted to this highly competitive program, you will complete two additional years at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics (UWHC). Upon completion of the UWHC program, you will have earned your B.S. in Medical Science from Edgewood College, and will be eligible to become a certified medical sonographer.
Radiologic technologists perform diagnostic imaging examinations and work under the guidance of radiologists. They use multiple kinds of ionizing radiation to identify and/or treat disease and to diagnose medical problems.
