Overview

The Graduate Law degree is offered by The University of Exeter and covers all the foundation subjects required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board to pass the Academic Stage of training that forms part of the professional qualification as a lawyer in England & Wales. Study will also include a number of law elective subjects.

The degree is vocation-facing, and most graduates pursue further training and a career in law after graduation, often in another jurisdiction (their home country). The concentrated nature of study is only appropriate to those who have already acquired basic study skills through a previous (usually non-law) degree programme.

The Graduate LLB offers opportunities for you to enhance your employability skills. As well as the wide range of curriculum based learning activities, you will have the chance to take part in mooting and pro bono work, and benefit from a range of career activities throughout the year.

Careers

We have an excellent track record of graduate employment. Many firms target the University when recruiting new graduates and our annual Law Fair provides one of several opportunities to meet prospective  employers.

We have an excellent relationship with members of the legal profession who are in regular contact with students  through activities such as workshops, skills sessions, mooting, networking, internships, shadowing and mentoring.

Students also benefit from our strong links with alumni all over the world. Many of our alumni are in senior positions and include:

  • His Hon Judge Phillip Waller CBE
  • Steve Edge, Partner – Slaughter and May
  • Fiona Shackleton, Partner – Payne Hicks Beach
  • Dato Ambiga Sreenevasan – President of the Malaysian Bar Council
  • Sarah Turvill – Chairman of Willis International Ltd

Many graduates go on to further study in the law and then enter a training contract with a firm of solicitors or a pupillage in a barrister’s chambers.  A law degree also provides a range of skills which are sought by other sectors such as business, finance and administration.
