Overview

By the end of their college journey, politics students will be able to view political issues with these questions in mind, allowing for a discerning study of politics from a holistic perspective. Our nationally renowned faculty ensures that this knowledge leads to fulfilling personal lives along with successful careers in law, government agencies, foundations and many others. 

What Can I Do With a Degree in Political Science at the Saint Vincent College? The program approaches the study of politics as both philosophical reflection and analytical art. From the study of ancient, modern and contemporary sources, students are led to examine critically the ideas and events that have influenced the formation of political principles, government organization, characteristics of citizenship and social policy. 

Along with philosophical grounding, the program seeks to provide the analytical competence to understand the contemporary political environment, to address effectively public policy issues and to contribute intellectually and practically to the sociopolitical challenges of our times.

Student Learning Outcomes

Politics courses are designed to promote the following:

  • Students will be able to identify, explain, apply and analyze the Great Books of Western civilization and the great political writings of the American tradition and assess how they continue to shape political life.
  • Students will be able to identify, explain, apply and analyze the principles of the American founding and assess how they continue to shape American political life. 
  • Students will be able to identify, explain, apply and analyze the principles and practices of the U.S. Constitution and American political and legal institutions, and interpret and assess these principles and practices.
  • Students will be able to identify, explain, apply and analyze the principles of international and comparative politics and assess their relationship to American interests.
  • Students will be able to defend, apply and combine the liberal and civic arts, i.e., those arts conducive to the cultivation of free citizens, in preparation for successful careers, further education, and meaningful lives.

  • Submit original or certified copies of the original and official academic record, transcript or examination results for the completion of secondary education. Official documents not issued in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  • Submit the application fee of $25 or waiver form.
  • Submit an official result of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Test System (IELTS). TOEFL score of 79 on the IBT and 6.5 on the IELTS or higher is required for applicants.
  • The SAT is NOT required.
  • Writing sample or essay.
  • Scanned copy of passport photo page.
