The students in the Visual Arts program at University of Texas Permian Basin receive extensive training during their undergraduate studies to prepare them to become professional artists and educators. Our students are ambitious, efficient and results-oriented. Upon graduation from UTPB, they have been accepted to MFA programs and employed as K-12 teachers in Texas.
Our professional faculty are practicing artists who exhibit their artwork at national and international venues. They have been invited to take part in art residencies at the Kohler Art Center, Stonehouse Residencies and Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice. Their work has also been published in 500 Bowls, Surface Design, The New Women in Print and Pictures: An Annotated Bibliography, Number: Inc. and Temporary Art Review. They are active members in the community and work closely with the West Texas Food Bank to raise funds to feed the hungry in the region. They have received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Women for the Arts, to keep the visual arts alive in the rural and underserved areas in the Southwest and West Texas region.
In addition, the department offers internship opportunities for students at museums and design firms to receive practical experience in a professional setting. In the summer, students who take the travel-abroad course, get the opportunity to travel to Europe to view art and architecture, and thereby enrich their learning experience. They also visit national museums and galleries that exhibit traditional and contemporary art to gain knowledge of current trends and practices essential for their professional careers.
